Main Street Extension

This project will extend the streetcar 3.5 miles south on Main Street, adding 16 stops and connecting the Downtown starter line to Midtown, Westport, the Art Museum District, the Plaza and UMKC. Construction officially kicked off in April 2022. The full extension is anticipated to be open in 2025. This project is a partnership between the city of Kansas City, Missouri, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and the Kansas City Streetcar Authority. Visit the KC Streetcar website for more information on the design and process.

 Future Streetcar Stops

The majority of the 16 new streetcar stops will replicate the starter line streetcar stops. The Main Street Extension includes two signature stops: the Plaza Transit Center and UMKC. The images below show the renderings of those stops as of March 2022.

The Plaza Transit Center will accommodate streetcar and bus services as well as bike facilities with a double-sided platform.

The UMKC streetcar stop will be the new southern terminus for the KC Streetcar. The double-sided platform will allow two streetcars to arrive on different sides of the track and turn around to head north.

It’s More than Track Work!

The Main Street Extension will change the layout of the construction corridor. Once complete, 22 percent of the extension will be dedicated transit lanes.

The images on the right show the Main Street and Linwood Boulevard intersection as it looks today and what it will look like once construction is complete. To make the intersection more pedestrian-friendly, the westbound slip lane on Linwood Boulevard will be removed, sidewalks will be widened and crosswalks will be shortened.

Additional route improvements include:

  • 64 new fire hydrants

  • 100 new trees to be planted on the route

  • 190 new and upgraded manholes

  • New curbs and ADA compliant sidewalks/crosswalks throughout extension

  • New sidewalks were they didn’t previously exist

  • Mobility lane between Pershing Road and 27th Street
